We're talking about music wise and not financially.
The trend nowadays, has the music of today gone better? Or bad?
I believe, for the most part, it has turned to utter crap.
I'm not hearing anything creative on the radio nor anywhere else, it's just plain "music" with no taste.
Too much bad influential music like "Rap." Most of the lyrics for rap consists of: Bitches, gang banging, money, drugs, chaos, and other crap that's pretty much meaningless. Not that all rap lyrics are like this, there are some good ones out there that have meaning.
As for "rock" all I'm hearing is emotional crap, such as: My life, your life, the world, the government...now this gets to me, I hear bands talking about government, how it's crap and how "WE" the people should rebel. Without giving a good reason why, I believe this to be, a trend of "Rebelling against authority."
That aside, we know that the major trend now is, "emo." Which consists of so far from my knowledge: Broken hearts, pain, girlfriends and boyfriends, drugs etc.
I clearly remember back in the day, there were far better music than there is today. Today I don't hear much creativity in comparison to the 80's or 90's.
The music itself I believe have gone through a trend itself. "Guitar Hero" at the forefront of it all. This changed the perspective on the genre of rock for a while. The "guitar" now is the standard of all instruments. It used to be the piano, then it progressed slowly.
Only thing about that, I hear is more "skill" than "creativity."
Which doesn't make much sense, you have skill...but don't put it to some real good use.
I only hear solos and solos and solos, that's the trend of music now.
That's the priority of all. I mean, I'm not saying solos are bad, it's just that it's overused and used in the improper feeling of the moment.
Anyway, that's what I think of the music industry and their little music in the U.S.

I think you're right about the bitches, the money, and the meaningless shit. However, I've yet to hear one about gang banging, drugs, and chaos (at least coming out of this past decade). I think that if there was a rap song about gang banging, I'd actually listen to it, because that'd be interesting. In fact, no, there is one, and it's good. Remember Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique? The one where the kid fucks his mom. Yeah. That's a good song. More on rap, it's upsetting how I can't enjoy my senior dances, just because that's all they play. Not one second of non-mainstream rap. I understand that it's popular, but the fact that there's no discretion, or rather, consideration for those who don't like the music. I understand that you can't please everybody, but switch it up and make a god damn attempt! I agree with your comment on the "rebel" trend, as well. I began long ago, and we should've gotten passed it, but the 'artists' today have lost all sense of originality. They're trying to grasp whatever they can to make themselves fit into the market - to conform to some (what I'm going to call) Brand. Certainly, the concept of true rebellion is relevant today, and I personally wished people knew, at least, what the Social Contract is, and why the government isn't upholding their end of the deal, but this music on the radio does nothing to spread the message. All they do it use the concept to their advantage, while not even knowing what particularly is wrong with the government. The emo trend fits the exact mold of this Brand. It's the archetypal embodiment of this fucking era. There's the threshold as to how much a person can take, as you know. Normally, such idiocy wouldn't bother me, but on a mass scale, it's detrimental even to me, as I'm bombarded -as I'm sure many are- by it. Many of the areas around town are infected with these people, which wouldn't bother me, if they just kept to themselves, which they can't seem to do. The music industry is crippled especially. There's no more quality, or soul in the music. What they produce are shells and reproductions of like "music," furthering the Brand, and now I can't even enjoy the radio. They don't know pain and sadness; it's all a poorly produced show designed to appeal to the pathetic, melodramatic teenager. I reluctantly agree with your Guitar Hero comment as well. While I do play it, I know that it's not really guitar, so I've got a different perspective. It's very hard for me to understand that there are really idiots out there who truely believe they can play guitar just because they got a good score on a song, yet I know they exist! I think the worse problem is that people those games to further their perspective on the music that's in. While a lot of it may not be so new, people who would've never listened to certain songs, now act like they've loved that shit for years. Many would argue, now, that this is good, in that it broadens people's taste is music, and in some cases I agree. However, what I'm concerned with, mostly, is the fact that people who say blank music is shit, turn around a week later and say that they've always listened to it. AND those are the same people who say that a certain band is their favorite, then turn around and call it gay a week later. It's absolutely ridiculous. Also, of what you said about people playing guitar now, as some kind of standard, I don't know if that's necessarily true. I don't think that more people play guitar now, but that because it fits the trend, people carry them around as a part of some fashion ensemble. You'll find that if you ask people walking around with guitars what they can play, many of them will tell you A) it's not theirs or B) they don't really play. Most everyone else plays Stairway to Heaven, Sweet Child O' Mine, or One. I've noticed that lately, all I've been downloading is old or unique. Oh, and Indie music isn't fuckin' unique. Rod Stewart, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Alice in Chains, even Public Enemy. If musicians started producing less shit, and actually putting some effort into their music, I'd actually listen and be able to enjoy and appreciate it. Now THIS is a meaningful fuckin' topic. |

Actually, there is another type of gangbanging. It supposed to be about a group a gangsters that jump people for their pride or something. Doesn't make sense to me but I have friends like those. They talk about it all the time when talking about guns and other gangs. Did you guys also notice how the rock bands on the radio USUALLY play in MINOR chords all the fukin time? It's getting ridiculous! Yeah there are some MAJORS here and there. But it's the freakin radio! So it makes sense.  Uhh screw guitar hero I'm done with those games. I'm fed up hearing my classmates talking about the same songs over and over again. Like Dragon force! FUck them  It's sorta true how it's like a standard. Well for here because everyone is wanting to learn how to play the GUITAR. I don't hear any trumpet! Cello! Flute! Blah! The radio now just sucks nuts. It's more of business now than music. doing so now. metal has taken a downward slope over the years. metal back in the 80's/early 90's kicked ass! there was clean and cut vocals, crazy solos, and double bass drums. Nowadays, you very rarely see this in the metal genre.
examples of awesome metal bands from the old would be Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, and Motorhead. examples of new, horrible metal bands are A Day to Remember and Devil Wears Prada. These bands disgust me cause they are considered metal, yet their music is shit. compared to the old metal, new metal justs sucks.
however, not all the new metal sucks. bands like Megadeth and Slayer are still going and saving us the old style of metal. thank fucking god.

I still don't hear that though, haha. To be fair, I don't listen to anything new, so I don't know exactly what's being said today. I do know, however, from a few months ago when I worked in my school's student store, about the shit they listened to on the radio. I swear, the music is so damn lazy... But in any case, I didn't hear a single violent word. Plenty of vanity, but no violence. As for the minor cords, that's what I'm talking about. That's what's in. When Goth met Pop, we got Emo, and now the bubbliest of people are pretending to be "dark." Still, in the midst of it all, I've stepped back from the Black Metal and expanded my tastes to many different genres, but I can honestly say that the shit you hear in movies, shows, commercials, video games, the radio, and school does not appeal to me at all. It's physically depressing - not because the music is powerful, but because of the people who listen to it, spend their money on it, and perpetuate the abominable trends. Fuckin' sucks. In the end, it makes you wonder: Will the industry bounce back? Should it? Does it matter? Should it matter? Maybe there's already enough good music out there. Maybe this trend's just got to ride on before it finally goes away. Maybe we over dramatize this, and we should realize that many people genuinely like this music. Maybe the world can suck a fat dick; we know what's good. It's kinda hard to place yourself in one of those categories, but I know I personally don't like the new music or the scene it creates. |

I've never heard of it. I'm sure there are still a few Hair Metal bands out there, which produce music like they did in the old days, but I don't think that time has changed the name of the genre (for the same music).
But, again, I just speculating.

Most definitely, but then again, we all get ideas from original ideas. Good new artists sometimes have their inspirations from others and have the same style mimicked but new tone.

There's difference, however, between simply imitating something, and drawing inspiration. |
