I'm going to give a step-by-step process on how to make an on screen battle system. If you have any questions, you can contact me at either here or at supergreeley1990@live.com.
Step 1: Set the Event Graphic to whatever monster you'll be fighting. Trigger Condition is Collision with Hero. Event Layer is Same Level as Hero. Movement Type is Toward Hero with Speed 8. Set Movement Frequency to whatever you see fit.
Step 2: In the Event Commands section, place an Enemy Encounter with the monster group you'll be fighting. Then insert a Show Battle Animation (targetting This Event), choosing an animation that you'd like shown for when the monster is destroyed (don't worry, it'll come back). Now insert a Switch ON called monsterdead1 (or whatever will help you remember this switch).
Step 3: Name the event whatever you want (suggestion would be name of monster group you're fighting). Create a second page.
Step 4: In Preconditions check off the first Switch and select the switch you made on the previous page. Change Trigger Condition to Parallel Process. Change Event Layer to Below Hero. Change Movement Type to Random. Change Event Graphic to blank.
Step 5: Add a Wait for 60 (which will read as Wait 6.0 in the Event Commands box). Add a Show Battle Animation (targetting This Event), this time for the revival of your monster. Now make the same Switch as you did on the previous page, except turn it to OFF.
That's all there is to it.

Wait, I haven't tried it out yet. But is this supposed to be like if the monster touches you, you go into the default battle system?

the monster collides into you to start the battle instead the battle randomly starting. the battle itself is not changed.

Ooh ok so it's like the Final Fantasy battle system eh? That's what you should call it. FF Battle!
