Okay, metal is my most favorite genre of music. However, I am noticing that metal has changed over the years. From hearing the stuff my brother listens to, metal has gone downward. I'll compare metal back in the 80's/early 90's to today's metal.
Lets start with vocals. Old metal vocals were clear and clean. Some good exmples would be Megadeth's Dave Mustaine. Another great example would be Anthrax's Joey Belladonna. If you listen to songs like Madhouse; Symphony of Destruction; Among the Living Bellyof the Beast; and Train of Consequences, you can understand the lyrics to a degree. Today's metal vocals are fuzzy and distorted, you can't recognize any of the lyrics nor understand them. That's what pisses me off a lot . Some good examples are Devil Wears Prada and A Day To Remember. Every time I listen to that shit it pisses me off!
Next we have the guitars. Old metal was insane with guitars. The verses and choruses weren't complex, they were simple and catchy. The solos, on the other hand, were the birth of shredding. The solo is usually what determines a song to be metal. If you look at songs by Judas Priest, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Anthrax you'll notice that they have a minimum one crazy solo, sometimes two. These aren't some quick simple solos. These solos are insane and make wonder how anyone can play with that skill. Now today's metal has too simple verses/choruses. Also, the solos don't blow the shit out of your mind. Once again, Devil Wears Prada and A Day To Remember are perfect examples.
Drums I can't complain much about either way. Both sides have excellent drumming skills. While old metal may have that heavier sound to it, while today's metal sounds boomier.
I never really could decipher bass so discussion here will end.
Well I feel I've expressed my opinion as best as I could.
