How it works is, say we get seven people. Anywhere from one to three of them are Mafia. (The number of Mafia is always less than half the number of players.) The others are Citizens. The Mafia know all the other members of the Mafia, but the Citizens don't. Every turn is divided into Night and Day. During the Night, the Mafia choose a Citizen to assassinate (that player is out of the game.) Then, during the day, all the players vote on who they think is a member of the Mafia. The person with the most votes is executed. (Out of the game.) The Mafia wins once there are more Mafia than Citizens (because obviously they'll win any future Execution Votes.) The Citizens win if they execute all the Mafia members.
There are other "special" type characters, too. Depending on if we get more players. I'll get the all the special powers and roles posted if we get enough people.
Because I'll be assigning the roles, I'll obviously not be 'playing,' I'll be narrating. Any questions: Post them here or PM me.
-------------------------------------------
Some ground rules:
* Players are NOT ALLOWED to PM each other outside the game forum. (Unless, of course, your role says otherwise.) All discussions of the game have to take place in the game forum.
* The Narrator (me) will let the players know when it is Day and when it is Night. Citizens are asleep at Night, and therefore are not supposed to take any actions including posting to the forum thread. Please wait for Day time to post. Subnote- please pay attention to the forum thread, since Day and Night are not concurrent with actual daytime and nighttime.
* Once you are dead, you are DEAD. That means no talking to the living players. No posting in the forum thread, no starting another thread to talk about the game, and no sending PMs to the living. The dead may, of course, speak to each other privately, and once the game is over they are free to complain about their untimely demise. (note that there is a special role that might alter this rule, just a bit.)
* If you have a question, please send it to the Narrator (me) in a PM instead of asking in the forum thread. Thank you.
The possible roles for the Players:
* Citizen: This is a normal person with no special powers. During the Day, they attempt, through discussion and logical deduction, to decide who among them is really a Mafia member. Every Citizen gets one Vote, which they can use to vote: player or unvote: player. (The bolding helps the Narrator keep track of the votes.) Citizens can also vote: no lynch, if they want to move the game to the Night phase without executing anyone.
* The Citizens win if they lynch all the Mafia members.
* Mafia: This is a normal member of the Mafia. During the Day, they behave like a Citizen, but at Night they are allowed to send PMs to their fellow Mafia members and decide on one Citizen to kill.
* The Mafia wins when they equal or outnumber the Citizens.
In addition to these main roles, there is also the possibility of these Special Roles. Special Roles are kept secret from the other players until the character dies, or until they choose to reveal themselves Some Special Roles can change the win conditions for the game. And yes, it is possible for one person to have multiple Special Roles.
Special Characters:
* Cop: The Cop is a Citizen with the ability to Investigate other players. Every Night, the Cop can send the Narrator a PM with the name of one living player they want to investigate. At the start of the Day, if the Cop and the target of the investigation are still alive, the Narrator will send the Cop the results of the investigation-- Innocent or Guilty. The Cop does not receive information on any possible Special Role the player may have. General Rule- if the player can kill, they will show "guilty," if they cannot kill, they will show "innocent." Do please note that this means that a Vigilante will show as "guilty" and an undercover Traitor will show "innocent."
* The Cop wins with the Citizens.
* Doctor: The Doctor is a Citizen with the ability to Protect other players. Every Night, the Doctor can send the Narrator a PM with the name of one living player they wish to protect. If that player was targeted for death they will be spared, and at the start of the Day, the Narrator will report that "no one died tonight." (But not specifically that a death was prevented by the Doctor.) The Doctor's protection applies to any Night cause of death.
* The Doctor wins with the Citizens.
* Traitor: The Traitor is a Citizen who wants to join the Mafia. At the start of the game, the Traitor knows the identities of the Mafia, but the Mafia does not know the Traitor's true role. While the Traitor is undercover, he tries to prevent Mafia members from being lynched, but does not participate in their nightly kills. If the Traitor is targeted by the Mafia for a night kill, he does not die- instead he becomes a regular member of the Mafia, and participates in the discussion for Night Kills from then on.
* The Traitor wins with the Mafia.
* Vigilante: The Vigilante is a Citizen with a thirst for vengeance. The Vigilante is allowed to kill someone they believe to be a Mafia member without having to wait for the City to vote. Some Vigilantes are Nightkill Vigs, in which case their murders may be mistaken for Mafia hits, and some are Daykill Vigs, in which case everyone in town witnesses their actions. Most Vigilantes have a limit to how many kill attempts they can make.
* The Vigilante wins with the Citizens.
* Psychic: The Psychic is a Citizen with the ability to speak to the dead. Once per Night, they can attempt to communicate with a player who has already passed on. To do this, they send the Narrator a PM with one yes-or-no question that they would like answered. The Narrator will consult the dead players and the Psychic will receive a reply at the start of the next Day (if, of course, they are not dead themselves.) Once per game, the Psychic can either specify which particular dead character they would like to answer the question, or ask for an answer that does not have to be yes-or-no.
* The Psychic wins with the Citizens
Special Characters that affect Win condition:
* Twins: The Twins are a pair of siblings with an unbreakable bond. They do not know each other's alignment. Their only special power is the ability to communicate with each other through PMs whenever they wish. If one Twin dies, the other dies as well. If the death was a Nightkill, they will die on the same night- if the first Twin's death was due to lynching, the second Twin will die on the next Night phase. The Doctor's protection cannot prevent death as the result of the Twin bond.
* The Twins win if they survive the game.
* Serial Killer: The Serial Killer is a lone psychopath. During the Day, he may seem like a normal Citizen, but at Night he stalks the streets, looking for his next victim. He is permitted to kill any one person in the game per Night, although the Doctor's protection may still prevent the death.
* The Serial Killer wins when only he and one other player remain.
There are many other Special Roles, but these are the only ones which might possibly be included in the first game.
